Constitution of The Tuxedo Club 1897: Rules

1. The Governing Committee shall hold monthly meetings on the third Saturday of each month at the Club House, or such other time and place as shall be designated by the Chair, and stated in the call, and also such special meetings as may be found necessary.

2. The order of business at all meetings of the Governing Committee shall be: First, roll call; second, reading of minutes; third, reports; fourth, filling vacancies in their own membership; fifth, election of members; sixth, miscellaneous business.

3. A vacancy in the Governing Committee shall be filled by ballot at any regular or special meeting, notice of the intended election having been sent to each member of the Committee at least one week before the meeting.

4. The Executive Committee shall hold regular monthly meetings on the first Monday in each month. The order of business at such meetings shall be the same as the Governing Committee.

5. Every candidate for admission must be proposed and seconded by two members of the Club. The name and residence of the proposed candidate shall be inserted in a book kept for that purpose, at least ten days before the meeting at which he may be elected. No candidate for membership can be elected at a meeting unless posted ten days before such meeting.

6. Candidates who have been left over at three successive meetings of the Governing Committee shall not again be balloted upon for six months.

7. The Secretary shall at once inform each candidate of his election, and request him to send his initiation fee and annual dues to the Treasurer, and sign the Constitution.

8. The election of any candidate failing to pay his initiation fee within thirty days after it is due and payable, shall be void.

9. Any member failing to pay his annual dues three months after they are due and payable, shall cease to be a member of the Club.

10. The clergy, and officers of the Army and Navy need not pay any initiation fee, and only one half of the annual dues, but in that case they shall have no vote in the management of the Club, and shall not count in making a quorum.

11. Resignations shall be sent to the Secretary in writing.

12. Visitors may be introduced by a member for one day free of charge; if for a longer period at the rate of one dollar a day.

No charge shall be made for the introduction of guests residing at the cottages of resident members.

The names of the visitor or guest and the member introducing him shall be entered upon the visitor's book, and the date of the introduction.

A member may have more than one room for his guests when there is sufficient accommodation at the Club House, but should the rooms of the extra guest or guests be required by a member or members, the extra guest or guests must vacate them upon one day's notice.

Members shall be responsible for their visitors.

Visitors when unaccompanied by a member, registering at the Club, must be provided either with an invitation from the Committee or with a personal letter from the member introducing them.

13.Ladies shall be admitted to all parts of grounds and house except those particularly excepted by the House Committee.

14. Members with their families may engage sleeping rooms in a specified part of the Club House, for a period of time not to exceed two weeks.

15. Other sleeping rooms may be engaged by any member, subject to above regulations.

16. A member having engaged a sleeping room for a certain term, cannot re-engage one until the end of the term, but may extend the time to two weeks or less, provided no other member has meanwhile applied for the room.

17. A member having engaged a room for a certain time will be charged for it whether he occupies it or not.

18. Children and nurses are not allowed in the Club House, except as regulated by the Executive Committee.

19. Requests and complaints shall be made in writing to the Executive Committee.

20. It shall be the duty of the Treasurer to cause to be posted in the Club House, upon the first day of every month, a list of the members indebted to the Club, with the amount of such indebtedness set opposite to their names respectively. Should such indebtedness not be paid within thirty days thereafter, it shall be the duty of the Treasurer to report the same to the Governing Committee at their next meeting. The Governing Committee may, at any time in its discretion, officially notify such member of his indebtedness, and any member failing to pay his indebtedness, excepting annual dues, thirty days after the date of such notice from the Governing Committee, mailed to him at his last known address, shall cease to be a member of the Club. Should the indebtedness of any member at any time amount to $300,00, his credit shall be stopped until the whole amount is paid.

21. The property of this Club shall not be removed from the house or grounds.

22. Servants must not accept gratuities.

23. Smoking is allowed everywhere, except in the dining-room, drawing-room, and ball-room.

24. The Executive Committee shall have the power to prohibit any games or sports which they may consider prejudicial to the good order and interest of the Club.

25. The Executive Committee shall define and regulate prices to be paid for Club supplies, accommodations and privileges, and alter the same when found necessary, and such scale of prices they shall keep conspicuously posted in the Club House.

26. No candidate for membership can be proposed or seconded by a member of the Governing Committee.

27. The privilege of this Club will not be extended to any person eligible to membership, who may be a lessee of property within the park, for more than one year.
