An Orange County Divorce Case: Infidelity 1878

Middletown, N.Y., Feb. 7.

Robert A. Sinsabaugh, a member of one of Orange County's best families, was graduated from the New York Dental College about 20 years ago. He went to Brazil and became prominent as a dental surgeon in Rio Janeiro. In 1861 he came home to this place on a visit, and his family endeavored to induce him to remain in this country. He was determined to return to Brazil, however, and had the day set for his sailing, when he met at a party in Middletown a Miss Green, daughter of Lewis Green, a wealthy farmer of dolsontown, this county.

Although she was only 15 years of age, Dr. Sinsabaugh fell deeply in love with her, and postponing his voyage was married to the girl shortly afterward. He did not return to Brazil, but opened dental rooms in Middletown, and he and his child wife took a prominent position in the society of the village. Mrs. Sinsabaugh was unusually attractive and had hosts of admirers. It was not long before gossip was busy with her name, and about five years ago her intimacy with a leading lawyer of Middletown became a matter of public notoriety. The husband, however, was blind in his devotion to his handsome wife, and refused to believe for an instant in her infidelity. It was not until last Summer that he began to suspect her.

He had been in poor health for a long time, and his wife frequently absented herself from home, saying to her husband that she was visiting friends. Circumstances became such at last that the husband's eyes were opened, and one day last August, when his wife told him that she was going on a visit to a relative, he followed her. She went directly to new York. He traced her to a hotel in that City, and found her occupying a room with a citizen of Goshen. Dr. Sinsabaugh began proceedings for divorce at once. Mrs. Sinsabaugh returned to her father's. She commenced a counter-suit for divorce, on the ground of cruelty and one for alimony pending decision. Her husband had kept $1,000 worth of jewelry that she claimed, and she brought suit to recover that. She also had her husband and a physician of this place arrested on a charge of having compelled her to submit to an operation to produce an abortion.

Her suit for divorce was tried in Poughkeepsie, and her petition was denied. Dr. Sinsabaugh and the physician were indicted, but a nolle prosequi was ordered in the case. The suit to recover the jewelry was withdrawn. Dr. Sinsabuagh's suit for divorce was referred to William Vanamee, of this place, for a hearing. The wife attempted no defense, and the testimony showed such flagrant infidelity on her part that the Referee reported in favor of an absolute divorce. Judge Barnard has confirmed the report.
