The husbands, wives,
dowagers, and children of
Brooklyn's wealth and fashion
danced and dined last evening as
the guests of the subscribers to
the eighth annual Ihpetonga
Ball, in the assembly rooms of
the Brooklyn Academy of Music
and the Art Building adjoining
on Montague Street.
A literal translation of the
Indian word, Ihpetonga is "On
the Heights," but nowadays the
word practically means
"Brooklyn's aristocracy."
Ever since the Hamiltons built
themselves a "suburban house,"
over a century ago, on what is
now Columbia Heights, there has
been an "exclusive set" in
Brooklyn, and to hold the
Ihpetonga Ball is one of its
great functions. This ball is to
Brooklyn what the Patriarch's
Ball is to New York.
The subscribers this year were
Tunis G. Bergen, Frederick P.
Bellamy, James C. Bergen, Edwin
Beers, William B. Brinsmade,
Jonathan Bulkley, John E. Borno,
Samuel W. Boocock, Henry D.
Brookman, Frank S. Benson, Amory

J.S. T. Stranahan, John F.
Talmage, Franklin E. Taylor,
Frederic A. Ward, C. Delano
Wood, and Robert B. Woodward.
These gentlemen divided among
them the $6,000 of the cost of
the ball. The arrangements were
in the hands of Arthur M. Hatch,
Amory S. Carhart, William C.
Sheldon, Jr., and William Cary
Sanger.
The decorations of the assembly
rooms and the ballroom were
decidedly effective. The hallway
and the staircase leading to the
ballroom were tastefully trimmed
with palm leaves and growing
tropical plants. The walls of
the ballroom were first hung
with a background of Nile-green
tapestry, over which were placed
modern and antique tapestries
set in narrow gilt moldings.
White pilasters, with gilded
capitals, were placed in regular
intervals around the room,
supporting a white-and-gold
cornice of arabesque design.
There were about the hall
several large jardinières filled
with roses and palms.
In the supper room the walls
were hidden by fir trees and
from the chandeliers hung
festoons of holly, forming three
domes, from the centre of each
of which hung balls of roses. A
third room opening from the
right of the ballroom was done
in Louis LV. style, with gilt
mirrors.
The guests began to arrive at 10
o'clock, and were received as
they entered the ballroom by
Mrs. Henry D. Brookman, Mrs.
Edward H. Litchfield, Mrs. R.M.
Stuart, and Mrs. William S.P.
Prentice. Dancing began at
10:30, Strebe's orchestra and
the Mandolin Orchestra
furnishing the music. The supper
was served by Pinard at separate
tables at 12:32 o'clock.
The cotillion was danced at 1:30
o'clock. The first figure was
opened by Amory S. Carhart, with
Mrs. William C. Sheldon, Jr.,
for his partner. There were no
favors. Figure followed figure
until 3 o'clock and then the
cotillion ended. The tired ones
went home, but the bell in the
clock tower on the City Hall
tolled 4 o'clock before the last
carriage rolled out of Montague
Street.
