 Events of the Week in Brooklyn Society
 
 
 
There have been no large public balls during the last week to agitate society, therefore the devotees of the dance have been obliged to content themselves with amusements of a milder nature. The success of the last subscription ball has induced the managers to arrange for another, to be given during the month of March. Mrs. Ripke, of 136 Amity street, gives a large ball and German tomorrow night. Invitations have been issued to over a hundred guests. The most notable wedding of the week was that of Mr. Edward Maxwell Reid to Miss Fannie Fairchild Edson, at Christ Church, followed by a reception at the residence of the bride's parents, 98 Third place.

Aronte Social

The Aronte Social gave a full dress reception at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin, No. 868 Bushwick avenue, on Thursday evening. Our forty couples were present. Dancing was the feature of the evening and continued until a late hour. The officers of the Aronte are Charles G. Bennett, president: George Goodwin, Albert Goodwin, J.B. McDuff, George Brown, Mortimer Reynolds and John Leavy. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Goodwin, Mr. and Mrs. R. Goodwin, Mrs. G.C. Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. William Young, Mr. A. Murphy, Miss A. Watson, Mr. A. Vigelius and Miss A. Reynolds, Mrs. Bennett and Miss Lizzie Bennett, Miss kitty Preston, Mr. J. Bennett, Mr. Bennett, Mr. M. Reynolds, Miss Rielly, Mr. C. Reception To Miss Nichols

A private and select gathering took place recently at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Roe, No. 218 Degraw street, who invited a number of friends to their house to greet Miss Nichols, daughter of Police Commissioner Nichols, of New York. The evening was pleasantly occupied in dancing and music, both vocal and instrumental. The guests included Mr. Gideon Roe, Miss La France, Miss Ford, Miss Lizzie Collins, Miss Agnes Collins, Miss Sophie Greenman, Mr. Samuel P. Hopkins, Mr. Louis McRobbie, Mr. Gibson Smith, Mr. William Bradley, Mr. Robert Collins, Mr. S. Smith, Mr. Wiley, son of General Wiley; Mr. William D. Fabyan and others.

The Washington Social

There was a large attendance at Rivers' Academy last Monday night, it being the occasion of the first reception of the Washington Social. Over 100 couple took part in the dance, the floor at times being very much overcrowded. The officers of the Washington are: J. Q. Adams, president; Clarence Townsend, vice-president; F. R. Campbell, secretary; L.B. Smith, financial secretary; E. T. Silver, treasurer. The Entertainment Committee were: C. Townsend, W.R. Jones, F.R. Campbell, F.A. Thomas, M.H. Green, W.J. Davenport and J.W. Van Dime. The Floor Committee comprised the following gentlemen: W.J. Davenport, J. Q. Adams, T.A. Thomas, G.A. Thomas, W.R. Jones, J.W. Van Dime, L.B. Smith and Fred Smith. Reception Committee: E.T. Silver, T.R.Campbell, W.E. Thompson, G.W. Metz, G.W. Thomas, M.H. Green and W. Braiser. Among the guests were: Mr. Jackson, Miss Garing, Mr. Kissam, Miss Nettie L. Dunham of Jamaica.

Reception of Relief Corps No. 9

The Assembly Rooms, in Washington street, were filled Wednesday evening, the occasion being the reception given by the Relief Corps No. 9 auxiliary to Frank Head Post, No. 16, G.A.R. The corps is composed entirely of ladies, whose object it is to relieve the widows and orphans of deceased and disabled soldiers. The ladies who had charge of the arrangements were Mrs. E. I. Jaschke, Mrs. Pincus, Mrs. L. Buckhouse, Mrs. A. A. Hall, Mrs. M.A. Glass and Miss M. Leisinger. The floor was managed by E. Buckhouse, Gustavus Voges, J. McNoble, J. Fallon and D. Brown. The following composed the Reception Committee: C. Hull Grant, D. W. Duryea, S. and O.; W.A. Furey, Mrs. E.L. Jaschke, Mrs. McDowell and mrs. A. Hall. Among the guests were Mrs. Williams, of jersey City: Mrs. Perry, of Rankin Relief Corps; Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. O. Hull Grant, Senior Vice Commander and Mrs. Duryea, Senior Vice Commander and Mrs. Furey, Mrs. and Mrs. James Boyce and daughters, Mr. Decker, Miss Claflin, Michel Keagan, W.H. Tracy, Miss Schulnerick and others.

Young People's Entertainment

The closing entertainment under the present management of the Young People's Association of Dr. Cuyler's Church took place last Wednesday in the Sunday school hall, and was largely attended. Those who volunteered their services were Mrs. E.J. Grant, soprano; Miss Emma Wilkinson, contralto; Mr. Charles H. Thompson, tenor, and Mr. John T. Sanders, basso. The pianist was Mr. Perley jervis; Mr. Cameyer, banjoist. The accompanists were Mr. E.W. Bray and Mrs. E.J. Grant. The entertainment consisted of twelve selections, which were well rendered. The tenor solo "Alice, Where art Thou," by Mr. C.H. Thompson, received hearty applause.

Ball of the Alsgood Rifles

The Alsgood Rifles gave their annual ball at Grand Central hall, last Wednesday evening. The members of the rifles formerly composed Company A, Fifteenth Battalion N.G.S.N.Y. They have been combined socially about ten years, giving annual receptions. The Committee of Arrangements were P.H. Rippenhagen, William Schull, L. Rasch, F. Witte, S. Schedt, L. Richter, H. Sibbert and Theodore Ahefeld. Floor Committee, Charles Peters, C. Bauer, H. Hilderbrand, Philip Barg and H. Beuhken. Reception Committee: P.H. Rippenhagen, John Alsgood and Fred Strohsall. There were present J.W. Rasch, John H. Doscher, ex-Major Rippenhagen, Lieutenant Eibe H. Hugeler, Mr. William H. Posbergh and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. C. Offerman, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore H. Ahlefeld, Henry Bebuken, Mr. and Mrs. Helfe, Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Gerkin, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Hombeckel, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Nollman, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Alsgood, Captain Alsgood and the Misses Alsgood, George Treiss, George Johue and others.

Small Select Party

A most enjoyable party took place at the residence of Mrs. Preston No. 13 St. James Place. The ladies of the company were all members of the Packer Institute, the hostess daughter, Miss Kitty Preston, being also one of the advanced pupils of that institution. The evening was very pleasantly passed with dancing, many gentlemen friends being present.

Banquet Given By Mrs. Cools

The parlors in the residence of Mrs. Cools, Palisade avenue, near Franklin street, were filled with a merry company recently, the occasion being a banquet given by that lady. The company were composed mostly of the wealthier German residents. Among the guests were: Mrs. E.T. Otto, T. Tanssig, Mr. Martine, L. Pattberg, N. Taussig, George S. Hagemeyer, Miss Silvie Brusselaars, Miss Cecile Van Flotem, Miss Shank, Miss Roeunnelt, Miss F. Taussig, Miss W. Taussig, Mr. and Mrs. P. Reizles, Misses Pattberg, Miss Conrad, Miss Bornesman, Miss Emmons and others.

A Children's Party

A large children's party was given recently at the residence of Mrs. William T. Haigh, No. 435 Seventh street, by her daughter, Miss Annie. Over two hundred children were present from 4 to 8 o'clock. The evening was occupied in dancing and different games. A children's German was led by Mr. V.B.L. Pearce and Miss Annie Haigh. The costumes of the children were elegant, and in some instances picturesque. Mrs. W.T. Haigh was attired in blue brocaded velvet, trimmed with blue steel beads and feathers, a creation of Worth's. Mrs. Allison Van Brunt wore a black satin dress, with diamond ornaments. Miss Annie Haigh was dressed in white lace over pink satin.

St. Barnabas Library Association

A meeting of the St. Barnabas Library Association held recently at the residence of Miss Malleson, No. 667 Quincy street. After the business of the association had been transacted, the members engaged in social conversation, passing a most agreeable evening. Among those present were Rev. and Mrs. Washburn, Rev. and Mrs. C.M. Allen, Mr. Simons, Miss Hoffman, Miss Gallagher, Miss White, Mr. and Mrs. Shute, Mr. Wells, Mr. Proosts, Miss Proosts, Mr. Davidson, Miss Cass, Mrs. Simons, Mrs. Hoffman, Mr. Stevens, Miss Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. Bohannan and others.

Bible Class-Reception

The members of the Bible Class taught by Mrs. T. DeWitt Talmage held a reception at the residence of Mrs. Templeton, No. 422 Pacific street, last Wednesday evening. The dresses of the ladies were elegant, many unique costumes being noticed. Mrs. Cassidy, the secretary of the class, is the prime mover in all the sociable reunions. The class will give another sociable during the coming month. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Sloan, Mrs. John Cassidy, Mrs. W. Drew, the Misses Cassidy, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Haws, Mr. and Mrs. George Anderson, Mrs. Walton, Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Oliver W. Drew, Charles Barnum, Philip Haws, Mr. McElhenie, Oliver Telford, Messrs.
