CHATHAM STREET-Original road to Boston. Named in compliment to the English statesman.

CHERRY STREET- Was run through "the road by the cherry trees."

VANDEWATER STREET-After the owner of the land.

ROOSEVELT STREET-After the proprietor.

JAMES STREET-Complimentary to one of the Delancey family.

OLIVER STREET- Same as the last.

BATAVIA LANE- The Roosevelt estate, through which this street was run, was called "New Batavia."

CATHARINE STREET-Through the Rutgers farm; was probably so named from family reasons.

MARKET STREET- Originally George street. A market was built at its foot.

PIKE STREET-Originally Crab Apple street.

RUTGERS STREET- After the family of the proprietor.

DIVISION STREET- The division line between the Delancey and Rutgers farms.

EAST BROADWAY- Originally Harman street, after Harman Rutgers. A fine name required.

HENRY STREET- After one of the Rutgers family.

MADISON STREET-Originally Bedlow street. The name of the President so distinguished.

MONROE STREET- Originally Lombard street. Same remarks as the last.

CLINTON STREET-After our new York statesman.

MONTGOMERY STREET-After the general of that name.

JEFFERSON STREET-After the President.

GOUVERNEUR STREET_After the original proprietor.

JACKSON STREET-Formerly Walnut street of bad notoriety. Change deemed advisable.

CORLEARS STREET- After Corlaers' Hook, the original designation of that vicinity.

DUANE STREET-West of Broadway, originally called Barley street; east of Broadway, called Colden street. One name being desirable, that of the Mayor selected.

JAY STREET-Laid out through Trinity Church property. Named, it is supposed, after one of the vestry.

HARRISON STREET- The residence of G. harrison, Esq., was at the foot of the street.

NORTH MOORE STREET- After one of the officers of Trinity Church. "North" distinguished it from another street in the city.

BEACH STREET- After an officer of Trinity Church.

LAIGHT STREET-same remark as last.

VESTRY STREET- Trinity Vestry.

DESBROSSES STREET-After a church officer.

WATTS STREET-Same as last.

WORTH STREET-Laid out through the Lispenard estate by one of the family named Anthony. The street became of bad reputation, requiring obliteration.

LEONARD STREET- After one of the Lispenards.

FRANKLIN STREET- West of Broadway, originally called Provoost street; east of Broadway, Sugar Loaf street. A common designation found convenient.

LISPENARD STREET- After the family of the original proprietor.

CANAL STREET- A large open canal once existed through the center of the street.

VARICK STREET-After the Mayor.

WEST BROADWAY- Originally Chapel street, after St. John's Chapel.

CENTRE STREET- Originally Collect street, from the pond. Acquired a bad notoriety, and name changed.

ELM STREET, ORANGE STREET, AND MULBERRY STREET- Laid out through public property in the vicinity of the Collect pond, and name not since changed.

CITY HALL PLACE- Originally Augustus street.

BAYARD STREET-Laid out in part through the Bayard estate.

WALKER STREET- Part west of Bowery, originally called Nicholas street; after Nicholas Bayard; east of Broadwa;y, called Pump street. A common designation found proper.

HESTER STREET- After one of the Bayard family.

GRAND STREET- West of Bowery, formerly Judith street, after one of the Bayards; that east of the Bowery always known as Grand street.

BROOME STREET-Originally Bullock street.

DELANCEY STREET- After the proprietor of the estate.

SPRING STREET- An old well was situated in early times on the line of this street. Somewhat famous in connection with the murder of Miss Sands.

RIVINGTON STREET- After an old New York family connected with the Delanceys.

HOUSTON STREET- The northerly boundary of the Delancey estate, and originally called North street.

BLEECKER STREET- From the proprietor of the country seat on the Bowery, through which the street was laid out.

ORCHARD STREET- Was run through the orchard of Delancey farm.

MANGIN STREEET-Named after one of the city surveyors (Mangin and Goerck) who laid out the river line.

GOERCK STREET- Same remarks as last.

WILLETT STREET- After Colonel (Sheriff) Willett, through whose estate it ran.

SHERIFF STREET-Same remarks

MERCER STREET-After the general of that name in revolutionary times.

GREENE STREET- Same remarks as last.

WOOSTER STREET-Same remarks.

LAURENS STREET- Same remarks.

SULLIVAN STREET-Same remarks

MACDOUGAL STREET-Same remarks.

HANCOCK STREET-After the revolutionary patriot.

CHARLTON, KING, HAMERSLEY, CLARKSON, LE ROY, MORTON, AND BARROW STREETS- Laid out through Trinity Church property, and supposed to be named after officers of the church.
