Entered 1796

Albert, John J., Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Topographical Engineers, on active duty at the beginning of the war. Retired September 9, 1861. Died, January 27, 1863.

Class of 1829

Mudd, Ignatius F., Of Washington, D.C. Enlisted April 10, 1861 at Washington, D.C., as Private, Company A., Fourth Battalion, D.C. Infantry Militia (Washington Light Infantry) for three months. Mustered out July 10, 1861, at Washington, D.C.

Class of 1830

Clements, Alexander H., Of Washington, D.C. Captain of Volunteers. Appears as Commissary of Subsistence, Camp Parole, Annapolis, Md., November, 1862. Appears again in the Post Commissary, U.S. Volunteers, Annapolis, Md., in April, 1864.

Dunkinson, William H., Of St. Mary's County, Md. Colonel, Proprietor of Point Lookout Military Prison, Maryland.

Class of 1831

Lee, William Of Elkridge, Md. Enlisted October 16, 1861 as Private, Company C, Purnell Legion, Maryland Volunteers. Fought at Cold Harbor. Discharged October 24, 1864.

Macomb, William H., Of Washington, D.C. A career Naval Officer, Lieutenant when the war began, promoted to Commander, July 16, 1862. Fought throughout the war in Blockading squadrons and in the attacks on forts in Virginia and North Carolina.

Class of 1832

Cooper, George H., of New York State. A career Naval Officer, he was promoted to Commander in 1862. Served throughout the war on picket duty and blockade and other services. Retired as Rear Admiral in 1884.

Class of 1833

O'Neill, John, of Philadelphia, Pa. Member of the U.S. Congress from Pennsylvania, 1863-65.

Class of 1834

Campbell, Francis Of Philadelphia, Pa. Enrolled August 14, 1862 at Philadelphia, Pa., as Private, Company A, Third Pennsylvania Artillery. Missing in action, presumed dead, at Smithfield, N.C., February 1, 1864.

Harley, John Of New York, N.Y. Enrolled November 1, 1862 at Washington, D.C. as Assistant Surgeon, Sixty-Ninth New York Volunteer Infantry, after previous service with the 155th New York Volunteer Infantry. Accidentally killed, April 15, 1863 at Camp near Falmouth, Va.

Class of 1835

Cutts, Richard Dominicus, of Washington, D.C. Commissioned November 29, 1861 as Colonel of Volunteers. Served on the staff of Major General Henry W. Halleck. Brevet Brigadier General, March, 1865 "for meritorious service during the war." Resigned June 1, 1865. Member of the U.S. Geodetic Survey for years after the war.

Darne, Alex Contee Hanson, of Montgomery County, Md. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy in 1841, he served as a Second Lieutenant during the Seminole War. Resigned from the Army in 1845. Was Active in Maryland Home Guard unit during the Civil War.

Ord, James Lycurgus, of Washington, D.D. surgeon, Battery K, Third Artillery, at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Md.

Ord, James Placidus, of Washington, D.D. Appointed from California, December, 1861 as Major and Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers, with the Third Brigade, Pennsylvania Reserves commanded by his father. In June, 1862, he was ordered to Corinth, Miss., where he served until wounded at Hatchee River, Miss. in 1863. Joined General Grant in the siege of Vicksburg. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel. Served under General Sherman throughout the remainder of the War and was at Appomattox at the surrender of General Lee. Remained in the Regular Army until his accidental death in 1876.

Class of 1836

Blair, Francis Preston, of Missouri. Appears April 26, 1861 at St. Louis, Mo., as Colonel, First Regiment, Missouri Infantry at the St. Louis Arsenal. The Regiment became the First Missouri Light Artillery. Blair was placed in arrest on September 15, 1861 for asking an investigation into the ability of General Fremont. Released the following month and promoted to Brigadier General on detached service in Washington. Raised seven regiments. Fought at Vicksburg. Major General, 1864. Marched to the Sea with Sherman as Commander of XV and XVII Corps.

Class of 1837

Kernan, Francis, of Utica, N.Y. Member of New York State Assembly, 1861. Serviced in the 38th U.S. Congress, 1863-65.

Knott, James, of Chaptico, Md. Enlisted August 25, 1862 as Private, Company H, First Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry. At Bolivar Heights and the Wilderness. Wounded. Discharged May 23, 1865.

Class of 1838

Campbell, Nicholas L., of New York City. Appointed November 1, 1861 as Acting Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Navy. Served throughout the War.

Graham, Bernard, of Buffalo, N.Y. Enlisted March 13, 1865 at Buffalo, N.Y., as Private, Company I, 5th Veteran Infantry. Was in the siege of Petersburg and at Appomattox.

Livingston, William, of New York City. Enlisted February 18, 1862 at Baltimore, Md., as Private, Company H, Fifth New York Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Corporal and to Wagoner, November 1, 1863. Reenlisted February 18, 1864. In action at Yorktown, Hanover Court House, Gaines Mill, Mechanicsville, Second Bull Run, Malvern Hill. Killed in action, September 19, 1864 at Winchester, Va.

Mark, William F., of New York City. Enlisted July 29, 1863 in New York City as Private, Company H, Sixth Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery. In Ammunition train guard, Army of the Potomac. At the Wilderness and Spottsylvania Court House. Mustered out with the Regiment at Washington, D.D., August 24, 1865.

McFerran, John C., of Glasgow, Ky. Class of 1843, U.S. Military Academy. Lieutenant Colonel, Brevet Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General, for "Faithful, meritorious service." West Point Classmate of General U.S. Grant.

Talbot, Theodore, of Washington, D.D. Served as Sergeant Major, California Volunteers, in the Mexican War. Second Lieutenant, First U.S. Artillery. Served as First Lieutenant, September, 1848 to March, 1861. Brevet Captain and Assistant Adjutant General, March, 1861. Promoted to Major and Assistant Adjutant General, August, 1861. Died April 22, 1862.

Class of 1839

Kenney, John J., of New York City. Enlisted August 11, 1862 at New York City, as Private, Company F, One Hundred Sixty Fourth New York Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to First Sergeant and to Second Lieutenant. Was in the siege of Suffolk, Spottsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Saylers Creek, Appomattox. Discharged April 13, 1865 at Sangster Station, Va.

McCarthy, John, of Salina, N.Y. Enlisted August 30, 1862 at Brooklyn, N.Y. for three years, as Private, Company E, One Hundred Sixty Fourth New York Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to First Sergeant, November 18, 1862; Sergeant Major, September 1, 1863. First Lieutenant, Company B, December 22, 1864. Wounded, June 22, 1864 at Petersburg, Va. Mustered out with the Regiment July 15, 1865, at Washington, D.C.

Class of 1840

Diamond, John, of Philadelphia, Pa. Enlisted August 19, 1861 as Private, Captain Duff's Company, Thirteenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, which became Company B, One Hundred Second Pennsylvania Infantry. Enlistment period, three years. Fought at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. Appears in April, 1863 as Teamster in Ammunition Train. Discharged September 3, 1864 on expiration of enlistment.

Class of 1841

Carr, Morgan, of Philadelphia, Pa. Enlisted April 18, 1861 at Philadelphia, Pa. as Private, Company G, Nineteenth Pennsylvania Infantry, for three months. On Provost duty at Fort McHenry. Mustered out August 8, 1861.

Denby, Charles L., of Evansville, Indiana. Appointed September 9, 1861, Lieutenant Colonel, Forty Second Indiana Infantry Volunteers. Resigned, October 21, 1862 to take command as Colonel of the Eightieth Indiana Infantry, after being severely wounded in the Battle of Perryville, Ky. Resigned in January, 1863, on surgeon's Certificate. United States Minister to China under President Cleveland, 1885.

McCoy, John A., of Philadelphia, Pa. Enlisted September 1, 1864 at Meadville, Pa. as Private, Company K, Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry, for one year. Promoted to Hospital Steward, November 1, 1864, and to Assistant Surgeon, June 14, 1865. Discharged July 15, 1865.

Class of 1842

Beatty, Charles W., of Baltimore, Md. First Lieutenant, Company A, First Maryland Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry (Cole's Cavalry). Fought at Berryville, Gettysburg, Leesburg, Monocacy, Winchester, Cedar Creek.

Beatty, James L., of Baltimore, Md. Private, Battery B, First Maryland Artillery (Snow's Light Artillery). Died in service, June, 1862, while in Peninsula campaign.

Cicotte, John B., of Detroit, Mich. Enlisted February 26, 1864 at Ecorse, Mich. as Private, Company F, Twenty Fourth Regiment, Michigan Infantry. Fought at the Wilderness and Spottsylvania Court House. Killed in action, June 18, 1864 at Petersburg, Va.

Clinton, Dewitt
, of New York State. Appointed November 1, 1861 at Albany, N.Y. as Second Lieutenant, Company A, Tenth Regiment, New York Infantry. Detached and sent to Fortress Monroe, Va., on staff of General Wool. Mustered out and discharged on October 8, 1862 to accept promotion to Captain and Voluntary Aide-de-Camp to General Wool, at Baltimore, Md.

Garesche, Julius Peter, of Delaware. Lieutenant of Artillery. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, Adjutant General and Chief of Staff to General William S. Rosecrans, Commanding General, Army of the Cumberland. Killed in action, battle of Stone River, December 31, 1862, his head being blown off while standing beside the General.
