I get into the Bruscianese Passenger Lists,
I would like to give a little background
information on Italian Harlem, where many of
the Bruscianese people went to live when
they first came to America. It was called an
uptown "Little Italy" located between 104th
and 119th streets, from Third Avenue to the
East River, no more than a couple of blocks
long and wide, that once teemed with Italian
immigrants. Masses of Italian immigrants
escaping the congestion of the notorious
Mulberry bend area of lower Manhattan with
its filthy overcrowded tenements, inadequate
water and sanitation provisions moved to
East Harlem.
Italians from the regions of Basilicata,
Calabria, Sicily and Brusciano, bypassing
the lower Manhattan area, established their
communities here during the last quarter of
the 19th century. A neighborhood, where an
undaunted Italian community despite
discrimination, hardships and suffering in
adapting themselves to their new
environment, has always worked diligently
and consistently , preserving and promoting
their cultural heritage. One of the most
outstanding features of this neighborhood
was and continues to be, the annual
celebration of Catholic feasts, where the
Italian worshippers would honor their
saints. The Feast of Mt. Carmel, down on
First Avenue, at one time in attendance
there were 50,000 or more and the Giglio
Feasts.
Please keep in mind, that the Giglio feasts
that have been and are still being
celebrated in East Harlem, has its origin in
Brusciano, Italy.
Around the turn of the century, many
families from Brusciano, Italy migrated to
East Harlem , New York bringing their
beloved traditions, culture, language and
religion which included the yearly Dance of
the Giglio Festival in honor of Sant'
Antonio. This is where the history of
Brusciano, Italy and the history of Italian
Harlem are inter-twined. Many Italian
Americans have their roots in Brusciano,
Italy. This Bruscianese Passenger List which I have
researched and compiled
has been prepared exclusively for the benefit of the Bruscianese descendants.

Bruscianese, vorrei dare alcune informazioni
